Pressure dependence
Relying on stress, urgency, or fear to function until it becomes unsustainable.

What it is
Pressure dependence is when you rely on urgency to activate. And that pressure can come from anywhere. You may tell yourself you “work best under pressure,” and sometimes pressure really does create short-term focus. But if stress is your main fuel, you may struggle to start until consequences are close, then rush, panic, and crash. Over time, the nervous system learns that action only happens when there’s danger. This can make calm productivity feel almost impossible because calm doesn’t create enough activation.
Additional resources to explore: Structured activation helps most, like earlier check-ins, draft deadlines, body doubling, timers, and scheduled work blocks that give you enough of a push to start without panic. Stress-management work can help if urgency has become your main fuel. If this runs across most parts of your life, especially alongside trouble starting tasks, time blindness, or deadline dependence, it's worth raising with a professional, who can look at what's behind it, including ADHD. Executive function coaching or neurodivergence-informed CBT can help if that fits.
Tips / how to work on it
Don’t remove pressure all at once; replace destructive pressure with structured activation. Create earlier, smaller forms of urgency: a check-in, a draft deadline, a body double, a timer, a public commitment, or a scheduled work block. The goal is to generate enough activation to start without needing panic to do the job.
A useful exercise: use a pressure replacement plan. For any task, write: What deadline am I waiting for? What smaller deadline can I create earlier? Who or what can add accountability? What’s the first visible deliverable? This moves activation earlier and makes it less costly.
