Personalization
Personal Patterns
What is it?
Personalization is when your mind makes you the center or cause of something without enough evidence. Someone seems quiet, and you assume you did something wrong. A plan changes, and you assume it’s because of you. A conflict happens, and you take responsibility for everyone’s feelings. This pattern can create chronic guilt and hyper-responsibility because you start treating other people’s moods, choices, reactions, or limitations as proof of your impact.
How do people work on it?
The skill is to widen the cause map. Ask, “What are five possible factors here besides me?” Other people have stress, moods, histories, preferences, distractions, and limitations that may have nothing to do with you. Then ask, “What part, if any, is actually mine to own?” This lets you take appropriate responsibility without taking excessive responsibility.
A useful exercise: make a responsibility pie chart. Draw a circle and divide responsibility across all realistic factors: your actions, their actions, timing, context, stress, miscommunication, outside circumstances. If you initially give yourself 100%, force yourself to include at least five other factors before deciding what’s truly yours.
Additional resources to explore: CBT can help with guilt-driven thoughts and distorted responsibility. Schema therapy or compassion-focused therapy may be useful if personalization is tied to deep shame, early responsibility, or a long-standing belief that you’re always the problem.
